Collection: Charles Prickett Collection

Description

The collection comprises 153 black and white negatives (mostly glass plate with a few photographic film negatives) and photographic prints of the negatives, taken by Charles William Prickett (1896-1976) between about 1920 and 1945. The images, primarily of London, include views of the River Thames, Liverpool Street Railway Station, Covent Garden, the Shot Tower on the South Bank, Inns of Court, Georgian squares, the demolition of old Waterloo Bridge and other buildings prior to or during demolition, plus bomb damage in the St Paul's area. Three negatives appear to have been taken much earlier than the rest of the collection, between 1895 - 1905, and it has therefore been assumed that these were not taken by Prickett. The collection file contains notes on the collection including biographical information on the photographer and four sheets of laser prints of existing negatives, although one of these does not have a corresponding negative and shows part of a sailing ship in the foreground, a bridge or pier in the background and St Paul's Cathedral just visible in the far distance.
