Coal Drops, 110 metres east of Soho Engine Shed, Soho, Shildon - County Durham (UA)

Built 1846, a very early, rarely surviving, facility for refuelling steam locomotives. It might originally have operated entirely using gravity, potentially influencing the design of mid-C19 coal staithes and later marshalling yards where gravity was also used in place of shunting with horses or locomotives. Built for the pioneering and internationally influential Stockton & Darlington Railway. The Coal Drops have suffered from structural movement and the stonework is eroded and open-jointed. Repairs are being carried out by Durham County Council, supported by a Levelling-Up Grant.
