Are you a 16-24-year-old? Find out about Kickstart Placements at Historic England
Our Kickstart Placements
Through study of Ancient History and Classics at University, I discovered an interest in material culture, exploring objects as a means of understanding ancient civilisations. An increasing interest in archaeology and collections culminated into a desire to work in Finds, as it allows me to follow objects from historical context into museums and research.
The Historic England Kickstarter presents an amazing opportunity to work on a range of incredible sites, including Birdoswald on Hadrian’s wall, learning from expert Finds Specialists and archaeologists. Through the Kickstarter scheme I am receiving a range of amazing training opportunities, and am excited to learn all I can.
I grew up just a few hundred yards from a Roman rural sanctuary on Groundwell Ridge, listed by Historic England. I regularly visit this site, and always appreciate the fact that the paths I am walking have been walked on by people for thousands of years. Further to this site, growing up in Wiltshire has given me a plethora of historic sites to frequent; from towns like Bath and Cirencester, to Stonehenge or Avebury stone circle. The history of England has always held a prominent place in my surroundings and my interests; I believe passionately that it should be protected for future generations to marvel at and use as a vessel to contemplate their own place in the history of mankind.
My role as Youth Heritage Advisor involves working with other Kickstart Placements throughout Historic England and their many gateway organisations to produce a comprehensive research report on how Young people are currently engaged in the Heritage sector – focusing on general public engagement and employment engagement – and how this may be improved in the future.
Although my history education stopped when I pursued my main interest of sport science through university, it didn’t stop my fascination for our heritage. I have always been interested in the creations of our ancestors and believe they should be carefully preserved so they can be enjoyed by future generations.
The pandemic delayed my job search after university, so subsequently I enrolled on the Universal Credit scheme for help. I often worried about whether I had the necessary experience, which put me off applying for a lot of jobs, so my work coach pointed me into the direction of the Kickstart scheme. I knew through a relative’s experience that, as well as aligning with my interests, Historic England was a great place to work with it having a relaxed but challenging environment, so I was excited when I saw they were offering Kickstart placements.
I joined the IMT department at Historic England in June 2021 as a Junior Information and Communications Officer, which allows me to work with the Change & Communications and Information & Records teams. I am looking forward to developing my knowledge and skills over the next six months, whilst learning about our heritage and helping those who preserve it, through IMT support and project rollouts.
With a background in marine science, I have been exposed to a number of practices in the field of marine environmental management and survey. As such, I have developed a strong passion for working towards responsible management of the marine environment and I relish opportunities to upskill myself in new survey techniques and the associated data interpretation.
I joined MSDS Marine in June 2021 as part of the Kickstart scheme as a Trainee Project Officer with a focus on marine geophysics. I am hugely excited to start in my role and combine my passion of history and marine management. I am also looking forward to exploring this fascinating career pathway within the marine field whilst continuing to develop my knowledge and experience in this area!
As a young child I always wanted to be an archaeologist, history had always just fascinated me, however as I got older life took me down a different path and I drifted away from archaeology. That was until June 2021 when I joined MSDS Marine as a trainee project officer. In the period between these two events, I spent my time studying for a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction.
Following my time at university while I was job hunting, I came across the kickstart scheme, a government scheme aimed to create new jobs for those 16-24 and on universal credit. I was then matched with a kickstart opportunity from MSDS Martine to become a Trainee Project Officer through my work coach.
I immediately googled their website and was very excited about the wide variety of work they do, as well as things like their outreach work with young people through The Y Heritage project. Initially I was little nervous about my lack of experience in archaeology. However, from my first interview with the company the team reassured me that it wouldn’t be a problem and that my transferable skills and environmental experience would stand me in good stead.
Kickstart cross organisational research project
At Historic England we are keen to understand how we influence and impact upon young people. We are developing a research project focusing on young people in heritage today. Our Kickstart Youth Heritage Adviser is looking for likeminded organisations to join this project. We look to create a network of young people from the Kickstart scheme to understand and evaluate how the heritage industry represents young people within the workplace focusing on careers, skills and training opportunities and engagement from the perspective of young people. We will be connecting with a range of heritage venues and professionals from across the industry to develop this research project.
We are looking for organisations to join us on this research program. Whether you are a Kickstart employer, a heritage Gateway or a heritage professional. If you are interested and would like to know more about this project, please contact the Kickstart Placement Adviser.
