Leicester High Street Heritage Action Zone
The enhancement of Granby Street, which is the main route from the station, as well as several other projects in the Churchgate conservation area. Some of these projects include the repair of buildings and public realm works, and the engagement of upper floor residential opportunities.
The area's architecture is varied but the main character is drawn from its Victorian buildings, as the city saw an explosion of growth during Queen Victoria's reign. Some notable buildings include the Turkey Café and 31 Granby Street (Former HSBC).
Leicester and the particular area the funding will support have strong links to Thomas Cook. His Temperance Hotel is on Granby Street and his former house is also close by.
How the Leicester High Street Heritage Action Zone will help
To release the untapped potential on Granby Street, which provides a key route from the train station into the city, and could help to improve the perception of the locality and the city generally by providing improved streetscapes and built environment. These improvements will help towards the area's continued transformation, incorporating a diverse range of uses within this key strategic gateway location to improve connectivity.
