Ursula Clark (1940-2000)

The Historic England Archive holds around 20,000 photographs by Ursula Clark. This is our biggest single collection created by a woman.

Ursula was born in Gosforth, Northumberland in 1940. She studied photography and began her career as a photographic assistant at the King’s College, University of Durham (later Newcastle University).

In 1962, Ursula was invited to join Oriel Press, where she worked as a photographic editor. While at Oriel, she co-authored with architect and architectural historian Bruce Allsopp a number of books on architecture, which her photographs illustrate.
