Buildings at Risk For Sale

Historic England publishes an annual Heritage at Risk Register. Very few buildings on the Register are for sale. Where we know that a building's on the market, we note it in the building's details. You can use the words 'sale' or 'market' in the keyword search to find buildings at risk for sale.

If you're particularly interested in a building at risk and would like to find out more, contact details are given for each entry. The contact is usually a member of our staff but is sometimes a local authority contact where they're best placed to advise (indicated by 'LPA' (local planning authority) after the contact's name).

You'll find an overview of the building's current situation in the summary and priority categories (see Key to terms and abbreviations for explanations of the abbreviations used). Please bear in mind that it can often require dedication and determination to persuade an owner to sell a building that's not for sale.

Other places to find historic buildings at risk for sale include:

  • The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) publishes a list of historic buildings in need of repair or new use that are for sale or lease. The list is available to SPAB members.
  • SAVE Britain's Heritage (SAVE) publishes a catalogue and online register of buildings at risk in England and Wales. The register highlights historic buildings that are vacant and whose future is uncertain with the aim of identifying new owners able to repair and/or find a new use for them. The catalogue is available for purchase from SAVE.
  • Some local authorities maintain and publish registers of the heritage assets at risk in their own areas so it may be worthwhile contacting your local planning authority.
  • Historic Environment Scotland manages the Buildings at Risk Register (BARR) for Scotland. The register highlights properties of architectural or historic merit throughout the country that are considered to be at risk, under threat, or with no clear future use. 
  • The Heritage at Risk Northern Ireland (HARNI) project, is a partnership between Ulster Architectural Heritage (UAH) and the Department for Communities: Historic Environment Division (DfC:HED). The project records architecturally and historically important buildings that appear to be at risk, and acts as a catalyst for conservation and re-use of built heritage at risk.
